What a herniated disc really is

Between each bone in your spine sits a soft, cushioning disc. When the tough outer layer of one of these discs weakens or tears, the softer center can push outward. That is what people mean by a herniated disc, a bulging disc, or a slipped disc, they are all names for the same basic problem. Trouble starts when that bulge presses on a nearby nerve. That pressure is what causes the sharp, burning, or tingling pain many people describe as a pinched nerve.

Common causes and symptoms

Disc problems can build up slowly over years or appear suddenly after one wrong move. Heavy lifting, a fall, an auto accident, repetitive strain at work, or simply the wear and tear of aging can all play a part. However it happens, the symptoms tend to be hard to ignore.

  • Pain that shoots from the low back into the buttock or leg, or from the neck into the shoulder and arm
  • Numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” feeling
  • Muscle weakness that makes the arm or leg feel unreliable
  • Pain that gets worse when you sit, bend, cough, or sneeze

How Briggs Chiropractic & Physical Therapy treats it

Our goal is to relieve the pressure on the disc and nerve, calm the inflammation, and help the area heal on its own, without medication or surgery. Dr. Keith A. Briggs is a board-certified chiropractic orthopedist with postgraduate training in spinal trauma and rehabilitation, so he understands how to care for an injured disc carefully.

Treatment usually starts with advanced spinal correction and gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore better alignment and ease the strain on the affected disc. We often add intersegmental traction, which gently stretches the spine to create a little more space between the vertebrae, taking the load off a bulging disc. To settle the inflammation and speed healing, we use drug-free Class IV laser therapy, along with therapeutic ultrasound and hands-on massage to relax the muscles that tighten up around an irritated nerve.

Just as important is the rehabilitation that follows. Our three physical therapists work with you one-on-one, guiding you through exercise and spinal rehabilitation that strengthens the muscles supporting your spine, so you are not just feeling better but staying better. For over 26 years, patients across Saugus and the North Shore have trusted us to help them recover and get back to the things they love.

We accept most insurance, including Medicare, personal injury claims from auto accidents, and workers’ compensation. To find out whether our approach is right for your disc problems, call our Saugus office at 781-233-4122.
