What balance therapy is and who it helps

Balance therapy, sometimes called balance & fall-prevention training, is a focused course of physical therapy that helps you feel steady, confident, and safe when you stand, walk, and move. Good balance depends on many parts of your body working together: strong legs and core, healthy joints, a well-aligned spine, and the reflexes that tell your brain where your body is in space. When any of those falters, you may feel wobbly, catch yourself on furniture, or start to fear a fall. Our gait/stability rehabilitation is built to rebuild that whole system, one step at a time.

Common causes and warning signs

Many North Shore patients come to us after noticing changes like these:

  • Feeling unsteady or “off” when standing up or turning
  • Reaching for walls, railings, or furniture to steady yourself
  • Weakness or stiffness in the legs, hips, or lower back
  • A recent slip, trip, or fall — or a growing fear of falling
  • Difficulty walking on uneven ground, stairs, or in the dark

These changes can follow an injury, come with age, or build slowly from muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and spinal misalignment. Whatever the cause, they are worth taking seriously, because staying active is one of the best ways to protect your independence.

How Briggs Chiropractic & Physical Therapy treats it

We take a non-surgical, drug-free, evidence-based approach, and every session is one-on-one — never handed off to an aide. Care usually begins with a thorough evaluation to understand exactly why you feel unsteady. From there, your physical therapist guides you through exercise and spinal rehabilitation that strengthens the core, hip, and leg muscles that hold you upright, plus gait and stability work that retrains safe, confident movement.

Dr. Keith A. Briggs — a board-certified chiropractic orthopedist and certified chiropractic sports physician — may use chiropractic adjustments and advanced spinal correction to improve alignment and the way your body senses its own position, which is central to good balance. To calm the stiffness and discomfort that make people move cautiously, we also draw on therapeutic ultrasound, massage, intersegmental traction, and drug-free Class IV laser therapy, which helps reduce inflammation and speed healing. Together, these tools help you move more freely so you can practice balance with less pain holding you back.

Serving Saugus and the North Shore for over 26 years, our goal is simple: help you feel steady on your feet and confident in your daily life. We accept most insurance, including Medicare.
