What spinal decompression really means

Spinal decompression is simply about relieving pressure on the spine and the discs and nerves around it. When vertebrae sit too tightly together, that compression can cause aching, stiffness, and pain that radiates into the arms or legs. Non-surgical decompression aims to ease that pressure gently, so the spine can move and rest more comfortably, without drugs or an operating room.

At Briggs Chiropractic & Physical Therapy, our version of decompression is traction-based. We use intersegmental traction, a gentle, rolling form of spinal traction, together with precise spinal correction. Rather than forcing anything, the goal is to coax tight, compressed segments into better motion and alignment so the surrounding tissues can calm down.

What causes that compressed, pressured feeling

Spinal pressure builds for all kinds of everyday reasons. Long hours seated at a desk or behind the wheel, repetitive lifting, an old injury that never fully settled, or the simple wear of years can all leave the spine feeling tight and loaded. Auto-accident and work-related injuries are common culprits too.

  • Aching or pressure in the neck, mid-back, or low back
  • Stiffness that is worse after sitting or first thing in the morning
  • Pain, tingling, or heaviness that travels into an arm or leg
  • A sense that your back never quite gets to relax

How Briggs approaches it, one person at a time

There is no single fix that fits everyone, which is why care here starts with understanding your spine. Dr. Keith A. Briggs, a board-certified chiropractic orthopedist and certified chiropractic sports physician, evaluates what is driving your symptoms before any treatment begins.

From there, your plan may combine intersegmental traction to gently decompress the spine, advanced spinal correction to improve alignment, and one-on-one physical therapy and spinal rehabilitation to build lasting support. To calm inflammation and speed recovery, we may add drug-free Class IV laser therapy, and use therapeutic ultrasound and massage to keep tight muscles comfortable. Every step is non-surgical, drug-free, and evidence-based.
